A 50-Year Farm Bill for Sustainable Agriculture?
Date:
January 13, 2009
As we all look ahead to the shape of things to come in the new Obama Administration, two familiar voices together call for a long-range approach to the challenge of food production and consumption in the 21st century. In an article published in the New York Times, Wes Jackson and Wendel Berry together call for "A 50-Year Farm Bill" and national agricultural policy based on ecological principles. Such a Bill will address " the problems of soil loss and degradation, toxic pollution, fossil-fuel dependency and the destruction of rural communities."
