New York's Sustainability Plans Discussed at Mayor's Climate Summit in Copenhagen

Mayor Bloomberg attended the Mayor's Climate Summit in Copenhagen, which was held in parallel to the second week of the UN Climate Summit. Addressing the group, Bloomberg said that: “As mayors of cities around the world, we recognize the importance of national and international leadership on climate change – but we can’t wait for national governments to act first, and they can’t solve the problem on their own. As city governments, we too have an obligation to confront climate change...we can’t walk away from our responsibility to future generations.”  http://www.climatesummitformayors.dk/ Mayor Bloomberg also took a tour of an offshore wind farm in the North Sea off the coast of Denmark: "Energy-saving efforts like the landmark Greener, Greater Buildings Plan will take a big bite out of our peak power demand, but we also need to pursue renewable forms of energy, like offshore wind power. I was amazed by the wind farm I saw in the middle of the North Sea and I would like to see the same thing off the coast of New York. For almost a year we have been working with the State and Con Ed to plan a large off-shore wind farm that would be three times the size of Horns Rev 2 and could cut New York City's carbon footprint by 430,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent." www.nyc.gov In Copenhagen, New York is one of 11 cities taking part in an exhibition called 'Future Cities', which is focusing on local environmental measures. New York's display had a model of the Empire State Building as a prime example of efforts to retrofit existing buildings for greater energy efficiency and savings. Copenhagen showed a wind turbine; Mexico City had a energy efficient motorcycle; and Jakarta showed a trash-to-gas generator at a dump site.   For live and archived video coverage of the UN climate conference, go to http://www8.cop15.meta-fusion.com/kongresse/cop15/templ/ovw.php?id_kongressmain=1&theme=unfccc
