New Meadowlands Stadium to be environmentally friendly
On June 1, the US EPA and the principal owner of the New Meadowlands Stadium signed a memorandum of understanding that outlines plans to incorporate environmentally-friendly materials and practices into the construction and operation of the new Jets and Giants stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
The agreement details strategies to reduce air pollution, conserve water and energy, improve waste management, and reduce the environmental impact of construction. Goals of the agreement include cutting the stadium's annual water use by 25 percent, making it 30 percent more energy efficient than Giants Stadium, increasing total recycling by 25 percent and recycling 75 percent of construction waste. All told, the goals of the agreement stand to save the equivalent of the emissions of nearly 1.68 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.
