The Department of Energy is central to a national sustainability plan. The US dependence on fossil fuels as well as the enormous energy consumption habits of Americans represent primary obstacles to sustainability.
Energy policy plays a major role in shaping the prospects for our future quality of life.
What are the prospects for sustainability within the DOE? What can and should this department do to advance sustainable energy policies and practices?
Background
During the PCSD period, DOE created the Center of Excellence in Sustainable Development, tasked with helping U.S. communities interested in sustainable development with information, technical assistance, referrals, and design review, was based in Golden, Colorado.
Today, however, the website points to the Smart Communities Network (designed and maintained by the National Center for Appropriate Technology, based in Butte, MT.
