Maureen Hart will cover the basics on developing and using indicators for measuring sustainable development progress; and share community-based experiences and lessons learned from years of work with rural and urban communities in the United States.  Maureen, as one of the nation's leading sustainability indicator experts, is now working with American Forests to bolster and integrate natural resource considerations in community measurement efforts.

Gerry Gray will share information about a new sustainable community indicator project getting underway involving places in Michigan, Oregon, and possibly another state; and its connection to other regional, statewide, national, and international efforts related to sustainable forest management.

Both also are presenters during the National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment focusing on "Sustainable Communities: Science & Solutions" being sponsored by the National Council on Science and the Environment (NCSE) on December 6-7, 2001, in Washington, D.C. (www.NCSEonline.org).
