The World Summit on Sustainable Development highlighted how the nations
of the world have done a poor job implementing the vision of the Earth
Summit,
with environmental degradation, deepening poverty and inequality, and
climate
change getting worse, driven by increasing consumption and production.
After
10 years, the United States still has no national sustainable development
strategy,
seemingly not recognizing the connection between national security and
global
sustainability.
What kind of leadership do we need to take us beyond the
politics
of fear and insecurity and fully address the demands of the 21st century?
With circumstances in our nation and the world looking increasingly
dire, many
are looking for leaders with alternative solutions that can present
a way forward.
Too many politicians and other leaders have a narrow, short-term focus
guided more by fear and special interests -- ignoring the longer-term
solutions which
have emerged as a viable path to sustainability, as a nation and a planet.
Come share your ideas about a new campaign being mounted by a coalition
of
citizen organizations challenging the lack of attention given by politicians
and
mainstream media to practical, sustainable solutions for today's problems.
Meaningful change will not occur overnight. Thus, this Campaign will
build over the
next two years, from the election of 2004 into the decades beyond to
create
a new generation of leaders.
Explore with us ways this Campaign can change national policy priorities,
highlighting
leadership rooted in community-based solutions for sustainability and
in responsible
citizenship within the global community.
