Appalachian Region
The Appalachian
Mountains, once as high as the Himalayans,
rose
up over a half billion years ago as what are now the continents of Africa
and Latin American collided with North America to form the supercontinent
of Pangea. Hundreds of millions of years later, after the great extinctions
and ice ages, sharp peaks became rolling vistas eventually welcoming the
waves of humans who would call these mountains their home. Today, Appalachia's
many communities embrace their history and traditions, struggling against
new economic and environmental challenges to their survival and quality
of life. In response, citizens of this region have come together to share
their skills and experience, working to ensure the sustainability of their
communities.
