Working Group objectives

  • To be a voice for grassroots interests in regional, national and international fora.

  • To promote an ongoing dialogue among local representatives (regioners) about local priorities and concerns and articulating these in national and international discussions.

  • To facilitate local regioner representation at conferences, meetings and consultations.

  • To act as a liaison with other CitNet working groups.

  • To identify and disseminate information on sustainable community initiatives taking place around the country and to showcase "steps in the right direction."

  • To promote involvement and input into the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

About the Working Group

The Sustainable Communities Working Group serves as the nexus for our Sustainable Communities Initiative, and consists of a group of CitNet regioners and members focused on mobilizing information and resources at the national level to support the inter-local needs of the regioners and the initiatives in which they are linked.

Part of the process of sustainable community development involves recognizing the interrelationship between local and global forces, that not only is the local human community part of a larger bioregional community, but that it is also part of a larger global community of communities. Thus, our sense of local identity includes an understanding of the global impacts of our local consumption and production patterns.
