The risks of depending on oil to power economic development have become increasingly apparent, risks that include possible disruptions of supplies due to political instability in the Middle East as well as threats to the global environment caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Many people are not aware that affordable energy alternatives are available.
This panel will discuss actions that can be taken to enhance energy security by reducing our dependence on oil while at the same time promoting a better quality of life, locally and throughout the world.
Examples include:
designing buildings and appliances for maximum energy efficiency;
increasing fuel efficiency standards for cars, trucks and SUVs;
providing incentives for a transition to motor vehicles that use less gasoline, including hybrid engines and engines using fuel cells or hydrogen;
designing communities to reduce sprawl and traffic; and
stimulating markets for alternative technologies using solar panels, wind generators, fuel cells and geothermal energy.
Relationship to UN work:
From January 29 through February 8 the United Nations will be holding
an international meeting to prepare for the upcoming World Summit on
Sustainable Development (scheduled to be held in Johannesburg, South
Africa in 2002 at the end of August and the first week of September).
Access to affordable energy for development which is safe and non-polluting
is one of the key topics for the World Summit.
