Campaign for National Leadership
Looking Back...
In 1992 at the Earth Summit, the United States signed Agenda
21, which called for national strategies, plans, and policies
for sustainable development. In 1997, the UN reminded countries
of this agreement.
In 1993 the US began a feeble attempt with the President's
Council for Sustainable Development—which was dissolved
after six years of discussions, detailed reports, and broad
citizen input. The result? A National Town Meeting resulting
in no national strategy or plan or office empowered to ensure
progress towards a sustainable America.
Looking Forward...
For the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002,
CitNet calls on Congress and the Administration to establish
that Office of Sustainable Development, a national strategy,
and the political will to make America truly sustainable.
As part of this evolving campaign, CitNet has been facilitating
discussions with many of its partners to help develop a strong,
coherent message and build strategic collaborations between
organizations concerned about the sustainability of the United
States and our planet.
Act Now!
Letting your voice be heard is one of the most important
hallmarks of any functioning democracy. At the Bali
PrepCom, several NGOs drafted a statement, "What
Are We Going to Do About the United States?", based on
an overheard comment from the conference chairman.
The statement has been turned into A
Call for US Leadership on Sustainable Development. We
urge you to read the statement and endorse it to express your
dismay with the current lack of sustainability in the US.
You can read more about this campaign and many others happening
now by reading the August
8th "action edition" of WSSD News for US NGOs.
In addition, check out what other
NGOs are doing in the US.
