Other US Campaigns

Many US groups are engaging in a number of different media actions and campaigns.

US NGO Statement from Bali: "What are we going to do about the United States?"

This is now posted on the website ( www.citnet.org/endorse ), with an input form for groups and individuals to sign on. This helps continue the momentum of the message delivered at the NGO press conference in Bali, and serves as a reference point for the NGO critique. One idea is to send this to Bush and Powell with a cover letter just before the Summit (with press release to media), highlighting the differences between the delegation and the citizen groups. The statement is now being included in other campaigns.

The Bet With Bush

SustainUS held a press conference on the Bet July 31 (more about this in the CPC Newsletter.) See http://www.sustainus.org/ for details.

Dear Colleague Letter

This is a sign-on letter by members of Congress to be sent to Bush about the Summit criticizing his pro-globalization approach. We are encouraging activists to urge their congresspeople to sign and support this letter.

NGO joint press conference on the Summit

FOE initiated some planning meetings to organize a joint press conference in Washington. Ideally the week of August 12, but possibly later. Hopefully to feature Senator Kerry and members of NGOs, highlighting the WSSD and some of the issues involved (esp. corporate and government accountability). No news yet on how this is developing.

Call your local newspaper and TV station!

Center for a New American Dream and Worldwatch have mounted a campaign to encourage activists and citizens to pressure their media representatives to cover the WSSD story and issues. This form is on the web at

Nitin Desai Tour - Town Meetings

We are trying to link with NGOs and others involved with the four town meetings on the WSSD where Desai is speaking this week. We are hoping to have our different campaigns highlighted with the audience and media. We will try to follow-up with some of the participants, especially with the media and congresspeople associated with those spots.

Email to Bush

The Southern California Network Committee for the U.N. World Summit on Sustainable Development organized the town meeting there has organized a letter writing campaign to Bush and others. The web form for the letter is at http://earthsummit.worldtrust.org/ .

DiCaprio, Global Green USA call on Bush to attend Earth Summit

Leonardo DiCaprio, along with several other celebrities, signed a letter to President Bush drafted by Global Green USA, calling on him to attend the Summit, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support a convention on fresh water access, and urge inclusion of the Earth Charter into the Summit political declaration.

Environmental Leaders' call to action for Bush

More than 30 leaders of US environmental organizations wrote to Bush in February, urging him not only to attend the Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, but to ensure that the United States plays a leadership role on a range of critical international environmental issues, including climate change, toxics and the oceans.
