Rio+5/UNGASS (New York City, 1997)

A Special Session of the UN General Assembly (the 19th UNGASS) was held in June 1997 as a five year midpoint review of Agenda 21 and commitments to the Rio Principles.

The session ended with little progress on future action. Everyone acknowledged that the planet's health was worse off than five years prior, yet arguments over how to finance sustainable development were left unsettled and few new commitments to concrete action were made by governments.

See the UN's Rio+5 press release page for quick summaries of the event.
