Country Blocs in the UN
A few groupings of countries have formed over the years in
negotiations within the UN. These countries typically have
similar interests or goals, and in many cases tend to vote
with each other. In many cases, a representative is selected
to negotiate for the entire bloc in an effort to streamline
debate and agreement.
At the World Summit, the following are a few of the county
blocs which will be key players in the negotiations:
- G-77: The Group of 77 originally represented
the 77 developing countries in the South, but the group
has grown to over 100 countries.
- JUSCANZ: (pronounced "juice-cans")
An acronym for the first letters of the industrialized countries
of Japan, United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
- EU: The 15 countries of the European
Union.
- SIDS: The small island developing states.
These are also part of G-77, but have special needs and
problems which occasionally are not reflected by the larger
group.
- OPEC: The Organization of the Petroleum
Exporting Countries. (These countries are part of the G-77,
but occasionally favor policies at odds with the rest of
the G-77 countries.)
- The Nordic Countries: The countries of
northern Europe and Skandinavia, known for their progressive
policies and strong support of sustainable development principles.
